PLACEMAKING | PUBLIC ART | COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

As part of Enfield Council’s Revealing Southbury initiative, we produced a series of murals along Southbury Parade that were shaped directly by the local community. Supported by Fisher Cheng Architects and funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), the project set out to celebrate everyday life in Southbury — not with a top-down concept, but through creative, informal exchange.

We hosted a drop-in workshop inside Southbury Launderette — a space that quickly revealed itself as the social heart of the neighbourhood. People came in to do their washing and ended up staying to talk about their lives, problems, memories — and in many cases, to make something. The workshop was designed to be quick, accessible, and low-pressure — no art skills needed, just a willingness to cut, stick, and chat.

Lead artist Andrew Werdna took everything shared during the workshop — scraps, stories, shapes — and used them as inspiration for a series of murals tailored to each individual shopfront. Each design responds to its location, with subtle references to the people, conversations and moments that shaped it.

Thanks to Enfield Council, Fisher Cheng Architects, Almaz at Southbury Launderette for her warm hospitality, and the Southbury community for opening up and getting involved.
